Kindergarten Plant Observation

In the beginning of the semester, we planted cabbage seeds to observe its growth. Children brought in recycled cans from their home and nailed holes on the bottom for water flow. Then we put in soil with shovels. We kept track of the plant’s growth every few weeks by drawing in their record book. Children watered the plants everyday and took care of them. Towards the end of semester, we observed our plant cabbage and drew what it currently looks like in our growth record book. Some children commented that their plant looks bigger, some saw bugs inside, others saw that there were some yellow leaves. In response to the bug problem, children have different suggestions: pick them out with tongs, pour hot water on the leaves, or blow dry them away. But they found out that these actions might hurt their plants. We researched that a good way is to spray water with chili pepper. To inquire on why the plants grow in different sizes, we measured the plant’s height and size of the can. Children found out that most big cans grow bigger plants. They also think that the bigger plants might have received more water or sunshine. We are planning to harvest the plants and consume them once they are ready.
