In this unit, students explored the central idea that human actions have an impact on the planet, especially our oceans. They investigated major threats facing ocean life, including plastic pollution, overfishing, water pollution, and climate change.

Working in small groups, students collaborated to research one of these important issues. They developed their understanding by asking questions, exploring reliable sources, and identifying how these problems affect marine ecosystems. A key focus of the unit was on taking action — students didn’t just learn about the issues, they also explored solutions and what we can do to make a difference. As part of this, we took part in a beach clean where the students saw firsthand how our oceans are in crisis. They were shocked by what they found on one of our local beaches!

Each group created a presentation to share their learning and action ideas with their peers in Grade 3 and 4. The audience took part by giving thoughtful peer feedback, helping presenters reflect on their message and delivery.

Throughout the unit, students gained valuable experience in:

  • Working as a team

  • Researching a real-world issue

  • Speaking confidently in front of others

  • Receiving and using feedback to improve

As they practiced and reflected, students noticed that they grew more confident and communicated more clearly with each opportunity. This unit was not only a rich learning experience but also showed students that their voices and actions can help protect the planet.
