Grade 2 has been diligently developing their understanding of heroes during our “Who We Are” unit. During this unit, we have been exploring the central idea, “exploring heroes in history can inspire us to be a good influence to the people around us”. Today we had the privilege of hosting two community heroes and parent volunteers, Ms. Chelsea Tsai and Dr. James Hsu.

Dr. James Hsu is a colorectal surgeon and father of Riccardo Hsu, and Ms. ChelseaTsai is the founder of Cookinn Taiwan, a culinary school in Taipei and mother of Cinnie Chiu. Grade 2 listened as they shared about their careers and what inspired them. In preparation for this visit each class practiced their inquiry skills by generating the following questions:

  • Can you tell us what your job is and what you do every day?

  • Why did you choose this job?

  • What do you like most about your work?

  • What is the hardest part of your job?

  • How does your job help people or the community?

  • What skills or qualities do you need to do your job well?

  • What inspired you to follow this career path?

  • When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

  • Can you share a fun or interesting story from your work?

  • What advice would you give to children who want to do something like your job when they grow up?

  • Who were your heroes?

After the parent interviews, students shared that the experience felt special and fun. They said they learned how people can help others get better and they discovered new ways to support their community. Many students felt they had learned a lot, not only about heroes but also about themselves and how it is important to follow your dreams. By asking questions and listening carefully, they practiced their thinking, research and communication skills. They also showed themselves as inquirers, thinkers, and communicators, making a connection between our central idea and the parents’ stories.

Through this activity, students not only strengthened their research skills by interviewing parents, but also broadened their perspectives by sharing, listening, and learning from one another. This experience helped them recognize everyday heroes in our community, appreciate the unique ways people contribute, and reflect on how they, too, can be heroes through their own choices and actions.
