In our Grade 4 IB PYP classroom, growing cucumbers from seed brings science to life. Students explore plant life cycles, photosynthesis, and the needs of living things by caring for their own plants and observing them grow from seed to fruit.

This project also builds ATL skills. Students practice self-management by caring for their plants daily, use thinking and research skills to solve problems, and communicate their observations through journals and discussions.

Beyond science and skills, the garden fosters teamwork, responsibility, and a deeper connection to nature. Watching their cucumbers grow helps students see how learning is meaningful, real, and rooted in the world around them.
