Unit 5: Sharing the Planet
As part of our current Unit of Inquiry, Sharing the Planet, our Grade 1 students embarked on an exciting and educational field trip to Guandu Nature Park. This unit focuses on helping students understand that the world consists of ecosystems where living things interact with and share resources with one another. The trip offered a wonderful opportunity for students to explore nature firsthand, build on their classroom learning, and engage with the world around them in meaningful ways.
At Guandu Nature Park, students were guided by a knowledgeable and passionate tour guide who introduced them to the park’s diverse habitats and its history. With curiosity in their eyes and questions at the ready, our young explorers ventured through several key areas of the park, including the Nature Centre, Birdwatching Cabins, Crab Watching Area, and Freshwater Ponds. Guandu Park is a VERY IMPORTANT migratory spot for birds (ducks, geese etc).
One highlight of the day was visiting the Nature Centre, where students used giant, high-tech binoculars to do some faraway birdwatching from four different angles. It was a thrilling experience to observe birds in their natural habitats, some of which were only visible with the help of the powerful binoculars! Students were amazed by the different species they could see and delighted in the chance to feel like real scientists and explorers.
Throughout the day, students also spotted many fascinating creatures, including fish, turtles, birds, dragonflies, ants, spiders, butterflies, beetles, crabs, and even a few playful squirrels. Although we were hoping to catch a glimpse of a snake, they remained hidden—adding a little mystery to the adventure!
This immersive experience helped students make connections to our unit’s lines of inquiry, such as how living things survive in different environments, how they share limited resources, and how ecosystems can be affected by human activity. Observing these animals and insects in their natural surroundings sparked many rich conversations, deepened students’ understanding of food chains and food webs, and prompted reflection on how we can care for our planet.
We are incredibly proud of our Grade 1 students for their curiosity, thoughtful observations, and respectful behavior throughout the trip. This learning journey to Guandu Nature Park reminded us all of the beauty and complexity of the natural world—and the importance of sharing the planet responsibly. Stay tuned as our young inquirers continue to reflect on what they learned and take action in their own ways to protect and appreciate our shared environment!
