G2: Science (Planting Focus)

Approaches to Learning (ATLs): self-management, thinking, research

Learner Profile: inquirer, thinker, communicator, risk taker

As hinted at the end of our last blog post, our current science inquiry relates to one of our Kuei Shan traditions, planting! This semester, we will be planting basil. Right away, the students had a lot of questions about basil itself (form) and the planting process (change).

One unique part of our planting process is that we take all of the soil that the students bring in from home and take it all down outside to mix with the Kuei Shan soil.

During this process, the students were all responsible for carrying down their own pot, dumping out their soil, and helping mix it together using big shovels and other smaller tools. Finally, they filled their own pots back up with the mixed soil.

The students are excited to watch their plants grow and be actively involved in taking care of them by making sure they get enough (but not too much water). We pray our basil grows well! We wonder what it will look like, smell like, even taste like.
