In connection with our first unit of inquiry, How we organize ourselves, our first graders recalled past experiences of when they helped someone or received help from someone.
As we inquired into people’s responsibilities to help create a successful community, the students all agreed that being caring and helpful anytime, anywhere was a key to having a successful community, including our school and classroom community.
With this, in our writing workshop, students were tasked to write a small moment sharing their past experience about being helpful. Throughout the writing process, they learned how to write a narrative by studying its elements, and they applied various strategies to bring stories to life - making people move and talk, telling small steps, and talking about the people’s feelings and thoughts.
