Back to School -- How We Organize Ourselves and Have Fun at the Kindergarten

School’s back, and it’s not hard to imagine the many worries a K student would have:

“Will I be able to find my classroom? Will I like it or not?”

“Will I be okay even if mommy and daddy are not with me? Will others be nice to me?”

“Will I be able to have friends to play with?”

“What if I can’t do what the teacher says?”

We teachers could see these “worries” in some of the K students' eyes, especially the newcomers; but after a couple of days of school, there’s less of these looks and every K students just about feel secure and that they belong.

The K teachers have made preparations even before school starts -- the classrooms tidied up and activity corners for reading, art, role playing, blocks were set up. And when the students came, the teachers warmly welcomed them in, and took them around the campus to see the facilities, staff, nature. We also did some special Kuei Shan Traditional nature activities to help students connect with the nature found uniquely in our school grounds -- walk on the big grass area, put fish into the pond, discuss what to do with a fallen banana tree and take action. We also set up class rules called “Essential Agreements'' together with the students to abide by and to help the K students in becoming responsible, respectful to others, and the best that they can be.

Let’s do our best this school year!
