Understanding Migration

The grade 2’s have had an exciting time learning about their Central Idea: Throughout history, living things have adapted to changes in the physical environment. They explored the concepts of adaptation, migration and hibernation and how global warming is negatively affecting these animals and what we can do to help prevent climate change.

For their summative assessment task they created a Migration booklet that allowed them to share and reflect upon their learning.

In their book they answered who, what, where, when, why, and how animals and humans migrate. They interviewed someone who had migrated and researched that country. They reflected upon push/pull factors for migration and what it would be like for them if their families migrated. They completed a survey in class to find out the top three reasons why the people they interviewed migrated. They then reflected upon push/pull factors and what they thought the top three reasons in the world are that people migrate and why this might vary depending on country and economic status. Finally, they used a Venn diagram to compare animal and human migration.

The children practiced presenting their final project to their peers and hope they will get a chance to present their hard work to their families at home. After a busy term the children are enthusiastic about diving further into our new unit: Sharing the Planet.
