G1: The Great Kapok Tree

Central idea: An ecosystem is a community of organisms that interacts with each other and the environment.

This semester has had a heavy focus on science; specifically, different animals, their characteristics and their habitats. Students have been introduced to various ecosystems, such as rainforest, desert, ocean, and the icy Arctic. They inquired into the different living things that live in specific ecosystems and how they are connected to each other through the food chain. We have also been using our core book for this unit, The Great Kapok Tree, to connect the relationships between animals, plants and our environment and why rainforests are what they are (causation)

. The students have been very engaged and have enjoyed demonstrating their new knowledge with our activities. They have chosen their favorite animal and written about that animal’s habitat. They have created a food chain with what they know about animals in different habitats, and they have shown their knowledge on the layers of the rainforest with their poster dedicated to The Great Kapok Tree!
