G4 English: The Value of Money
To begin the second semester, we started with the theme “How we organize ourselves.” The central idea was “Money is a human-made system that helps value goods and services.”
We focused on the origins of money, and how we value money on a daily basis. Students learned about currencies from different countries, exchange rates, and how to budget money. In the end, the skills and knowledge they acquired throughout the unit were put into action through their summative assessment, the Nepal Water Well Project. Students organized and executed the fundraiser very well, and the Grade 4 students earned $40,000 for the water well. Thank you to the parents for their support, and job well done by the students!
After completing the fundraiser, students were asked to write an opinion piece about what they believe they learned from the summative assessment. Because students had previously learned the OREO writing method, we reviewed and practiced with a formative writing assignment, before writing the opinion piece for their summative assessment. Upon reflection, students’ perspectives changed after experiencing some of the challenges and hardships that come with earning money!
