G5: Persuasive Techniques

Central idea: Media has the power to influence our perspective and the choices we make.

For our How we express ourselves unit of inquiry in fifth grade, students are learning about persuasive techniques used by companies and advertisers to convince people to buy products. Some of the persuasive techniques they have learned include bandwagon, hyperbole, repetition, humor, and warm and fuzzy. To show their understanding, students had to develop a poster advertising their favorite book and, using at least two of the aforementioned persuasive techniques, display their poster at our World Book Day exhibit. Kuei Shan students, administrators, staff, and teachers then voted anonymously for their favorite poster. Fifth grade students worked in pairs for this formative assessment and went through the process of drafting and re-drafting multiple times before displaying their finished work. Finally, this project only came to its full fruition with the help of Mrs.Gonzalez, our PYP librarian, who had the initial idea for a World Book Day exhibit and graciously allowed our students to display their work there, and Ms. Kao, DP art teacher and design expert, who came to visit both fifth grade classes during her free time to offer feedback and advice on how to design an attention-getting poster. Thank you!
