Looking at Family Culture & Values

Transdisciplinary theme: Who we are

Central idea: Family culture and values have an important impact on who we are.

Family Logo Project

As part of the process-focused summative

assessment task, students were asked to design their family logo that will signify their family culture and values.

The students were certainly very creative in choosing their colors, shapes, and images, as they had to justify what those symbols on their logo mean. Once they had completed their own logo they were asked to describe what the different images and symbols meant.

Metaphorical Thinking

Metaphorical thinking is one of many creative tools used to help students express their thoughts and ideas. It is believed to be an effective differentiated strategy as children who usually struggle in learning academics have more likely an artistic, creative mind.

This kind of activity opens the students' minds to think of what it is they

compare themselves to while giving reasons.

Family Values

When exploring family values, children completed a Role on the Wall activity.

During this activity, children were asked to consider the things that they value and record them inside the body.

On the outside of the body, children explained who it was in their immediate or extended family that had taught them to value each aspect.

Colour, Symbol, Image

Children were asked to choose a colour, symbol and image to represent their family and what it is that's important to them and how this impacts on their day to day lives.
