Our Voice in Writing
Theme: How we express ourselves
Central idea: Our voice is an important form of expression to communicate different ideas, emotions, and feelings. One of the more challenging writing assignments from Unit 4 is the persuasive essay. This task involves choosing a topic that the student feels personally interested in, and for which they are willing to do some research on. Topics such as social media, modern-day slavery, video games, stray dogs & cats, the death penalty were chosen – which gives you an indication of how quickly your 6th graders are maturing and the level of their concern for issues of the day!
As you can see from the examples shown, students followed the traditional structure and layout of persuasive essays with a smart attention-grabbing introduction, followed by the body (2 or more paragraphs of reasons, details etc.), and wrapping it up with a conclusion. They were also asked to add an illustration that represented the essay’s message.
We are very impressed by the students’ serious-minded attitude to this project and are looking forward to further developing their English writing skills in future projects.
