Promoting the IB Learner Profile and Attitudes

In sixth grade, the central idea for the fourth unit of inquiry was ‘Our voice is an important form of expression to communicate different ideas, emotions and feelings.’ Students inquired into the proper use of voice as a form of expression, particularly in the development of characters in a story and in expressing their ideas and opinions about a certain issue.

For the summative assessment task, each group of four or five students worked together to produce a video that would promote one or two of the qualities featured in the IB lists of attitudes and Learner Profile attributes. Not only were they expected to think deeply about the character traits they chose to promote, but they also had to write the script, choose a good location, learn the lines in English, rehearse the drama, film the drama, and finally edit the film. Each team did exceptionally well to further practice their video editing skills and overcome various problems and technical difficulties to produce a final video.

In this example, we see the story of a student named Jordan who gets bullied a lot. Eventually, he’s saved by a fellow student showing the importance of EMPATHY and COURAGE.
