Interacting with literature
Responding to literature is a meaningful tool for checking the reader’s understanding of the text. It shows new insights gained, reveals the reader’s thinking, and provides an avenue for the reader to interact with literature in creative ways. Kuei Shan strongly promotes this practice as early as Kindergarten. The poem below is a student’s creative response after reading the chapter book, “Judy Blume: Super Fudge.”
Judy Blume – Super Fudge
by Ariel Lan藍筠芮, 4th grade
Fudge is a boy,
Peter’s little brother,
He likes the way he is,
And loves to eat peanut butter.
Peter’s family moved to Princetown,
Because only of a little book,
Peter has a crush,
Joanne! plus she has good looks.
Mrs. Dudgment love worms,
She orders them every week,
She uses them to bake cookies,
And everyone says it’s sweet,
And I discovered that this is a crazy story,
That you could imagine
A lady that eats worms?
It’s never going to happen.
