As part of our transdisciplinary learning under the IB theme ‘Sharing the Planet’, our Grade 2 learners were leading an exciting whole-school initiative—the No Food Waste Challenge. This learning experience aims to promote sustainability and responsible choices, while also supporting outcomes in English, Social Studies, Science, and Mathematics. It’s an opportunity for pupils to see how their actions can contribute to global change, starting right here in Kuei Shan.

Throughout Week 11, all Grade level groups participated in the Food Waste Challenge, carefully weighing and recording any leftover food during lunchtime. Children applied their understanding of measurement (grams and kilograms), practised data handling through bar graphs, and reflected on the importance of mindful consumption. On Tuesday 22nd April, Grade 2 children proudly presented their No Food Waste Posters to various classes across the school during lunchtime. Each class visited a number of classes from Grade 1, 3, 4 and 5 to share their learning. The posters were thoughtfully created to raise awareness and encourage more sustainable food habits. Through these presentations, learners had the chance to practise their communication skills, take on leadership roles, and inspire others to reflect on their own choices.

Grade 2 teachers were so delighted to see such a high level of engagement and enthusiasm from all participants. The challenge not only highlighted the importance of sustainability but also celebrated the children’s growing independence and agency. Their efforts clearly demonstrated the impact young learners can have when given the chance to lead purposeful action.

To guide their work, Grade 2 children used a success criteria checklist that encouraged them to include bold titles, clear messages, illustrations, facts, and examples of their learning. During presentations, they practised speaking clearly, taking turns, answering questions, and using kind, respectful language. Their confidence and outstanding performances in sharing their work were a true highlight of the week.
