Importance of Cooperation

Theme: How We Organise Ourselves

Central idea: Cooperation is essential to achieve team goals.

As part of the process-focused unit of inquiry, students were asked to work cooperatively to achieve various team goals. The students were encouraged to consider each person’s roles and responsibilities during group tasks, which required them to develop their commUunication skills when sharing ideas, be both balanced and open-minded when listening to others and demonstrate the ability to reflect on happenings in their group.

If they want to join their new friend on another floating island, they must find a way to move from one island to another. Grade 3 students were asked to design and build a prototype of a structure or machine that would transport the characters from one island to the other, so they could play together.

During the Island Adventure task, grade 3 students were asked to use their critical thinking and problem-solving skills to survive being stranded on a desert island.

Next, they had to explain their choices to the rest of the class. After that, team were each given a challenge card and had to make a plan to survive using their four chosen items. It was pleasing to see children sharing ideas and developing a cooperative solution to the problem they were faced with.

Roles and Responsibilities - Merfball

An important aspect of this unit was for the Grade 3 children to develop an understanding the importance of roles and responsibilities when taking part in a cooperative activity. Children played Merfball, a team game. All the players had a specific role in the game. Upon reflection, students were asked to write an explanatory text to demonstrate their understanding of the different roles of players in the game of Merfball.
